n00bcon: World Championships. Info and registration.

Update 2017-03-08: All info on the upcoming tournament at n00bcon 9 have been moved to a dedicated site at n00bcon.com. Check it out :)

Update 2016-12-15: The 100 spots are earmarked :) We have participants from 11 countries and over 30 different cities/communities representing at the Championship next year! Note that there are still a handful undetermined spots to be given out by local tournament organizers in different types of qualifier tournaments (or similar). I'm keeping a wait list at hand, and we'll confirm the final participant list by March, in case some of pre-registered players have to skip the tournament for some reason.

Update 2016-11-22: After a lot of back and forth with multiple potential venues that didn't work out well enough, we decided to for Rotary Pub (like every year) in 2017 as well. I went to the pub and talked to them three weeks ago, and asked if they saw any possibilities in taking in more players (by e.g. referring to additional fire exits in the gymnasium were most people play). The pub managed to work with the regulations, and I'm happy to announce today that they are able to host 100 players next Easter. So, we just got 24 more spots. I'll update here with info on remaining spots. The people who has won qualification tournaments will still get something special at the tournament, be it a free beer or something more intricate :)

Update 2016-09-02: Due to high demand, we're currently looking into options got get a bigger venue, or possibly spread the tournament over a couple of days or multiple venues. If this works, we might be able to host a lot more players. Otherwise, the email from 2016-08-10 stands. We will know more by the end of September.

n00bcon 9 invites

Hi!
This is not completely official yet, but we have started planning for n00bcon 9 at Good Friday of 2017 already. Mainly how we can handle that last time, more people were interested in joing than we had the space for. Around 120 players were interested last time, and we only have space for 76. And it looks like a bigger interest for 2017 than it was for 2016.

I’ve looked into the possibilities of changing the venue, but it’s hard to find a good one which fits, and it really wouldn’t be the same thing. And I don’t see any intrinsic value in trying to beat the record for largest 93/94 tournament every year. It’s likely that this policy will lead to other tournaments eventually having more participants than n00bcon, but that is a good thing more than anything else. And if players want to play in large tournaments, BSK, Ovino, Nebraska’s War and Eternal Weekends are there for grabs. And sweet gatherings like Ivory Cup and Arvika, and the upcoming Fishliver Oil Cup in Italy, each with capacity of reaching 50+ players down the road. What n00bcon is, is the traditional World Championships, where players from all over should be able to gather with representatives from communities across the world and have a good time. Old school old school.

So what to do? First-come, first-serve looks a little more unfair these days. So instead, we'll give the opportunity to give out spots to tournament organizers in different cities around the world. The number of spots given out to each organizer is based on the size of the community, the age of the community, and weather or not they have been here before and represented their teams.

But first, we have some permanent invites in our Shark winners:
Shark Winners (10):
*Oldschool (n00bcon 3 2011)
*Pefken (n00bcon 4 2012)
*Elof (n00bcon 5 2013)
*Stalin (n00bcon 6 2014)
*Kalle (n00bcon 7 2015)
*Berlin (n00bcon 8 2016)
*Schram (BSK 2011)
*Brorsan (BSK 2013)
*Robin (BSK 2014)
*Olle (BSK 2015)

We also give out special invites to three sick n00bcon pros with multiple Shark finals and top8s to their name. Or in Sveby’s case, the only player apart from myself to have attended every 93/94 Easter gathering since 2008. The tournament wouldn't be the same without them.

*Jocke
*Icelander
*Sveby

Then we have the community organizers. Again, this is just to say that if you want to come with a few friends, you have a spot saved. This is to avoid situations like last year, where people had a lot of trouble booking travel or being uncertain if they had a spot open. You may do whatever you want with this. Maybe nobody from London or Ekaterinburg want to take the trip next year, in that case Chris and Constantine can just give the spots to whomever wants them. Or just give them back to me, and I'll find someone who wants to battle. You could have some sort of raffle or qualification tournament or whatever to decide who you think should come. If you haven’t decided what to do two weeks before the tournament starts next Easter, I’ll reserve the possibility reclaim the unclaimed spots to give to other communities.

Many of you have been here before. For the rest of you, note that n00bcon has a very casual atmosphere and is a fairly laid-back (non-sanctioned) tournament. We play for the joy of the game, for honor and bragging rights, and to meet a bunch of good people from across different communities and countries. The first price is a Giant Shark from The Dark. There are usually a few surprises for the rest of the players as well, but it is not a good idea to look at this as a "plus EV” tournament. The tournament fee is around 150 sek to cover all expenses, i.e. around $18.

You can read a tournament report from Danny from the US here (http://www.understandingancestral.com/2016/04/n00bcon8-pilgrimage.html) and Constantine from Russia here (http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.no/2016/04/the-perspectivean.html) if you want some ideas from a couple of non-Swedes on last years tournament.

On to the community slots.

...and then I have a small handful extra invites, mostly for players in small communities, or players that aren't in that much contact with the more established groups. I also throw in invites to a couple of tournament organizers who isn't on the lists above, and Jonas who contacted me before I got this list together.

Yespair +1

So, that’s it! Trade spots with other organizers if you want, give the responsibility to another guy in the community you think deserve it more if inclined, they are yours to do whatever with.

Hope to see a bunch of you at the championships next Easter!

/Magnus

Last year's info:

In the Easter of 2015, we'll be gathering in Gothenburg for the eight yearly n00bcon championships. The first official tournament in the format was held at Gothcon in 2008, but in the years since we've used an adjacent pub as our battling ground.

So what is a n00bcon? It's the World championships of 93/94, and one of the sweetest gatherings of unsanctioned Magic. It started out very small, but has grown a lot in the last four years. In fact, given some promotion it has most probably grown out of the pub, which can host around 70 players.

So why not move to a bigger location? Because we are no GP. We have room for enough players. We don't need to sit in a sterile location with over a hundred players to play good Magic. Maybe in the future, but for now ambiance is more important than numbers.

So who is it for? For the players who want to play for the love of the game, and for the people in the underground who find out about it. We don't spread the word that aggressively. I wrote about it in the end of a long post at the MtgUnderground blog, and at a private forum at Svenskamagic. Those who find the details in those places, or hear it from friends and want to come, are those who qualify to battle.

The Championship tournament will be seven rounds of swiss followed by a top 8. The last two rounds will be un-timed and draws will as usual be worth zero points. Unintentional draws in the rounds before that will be worth 1 point. The winner of the five-game final will get a Giant Shark, and the top8 will get some kind of trophies. Everyone of course gets a rad convention pin to put on their crude hipster backpacks. Aside of the Shark tournament, we will host Hövveturneringen ("The main tournament") and possibly other side events.
"Sideevent" Hövveturneringen during n00bcon 6.
Being far from organized play, we have some features that are unusual at more conventional tournaments. Betting at matches and drinking beer is encouraged. For those of you who enjoy it, there will be room to play for ante. For those who want to try it, there will be a drinking cube present.

The prizes, apart from the Giant Shark and the trophies, will be distributed in Easter eggs after the swiss. Your place in the standings have nothing to say in regards to winning one.

n00bcon 8 will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, March 25th. It starts at 14:00 local time, though the site will be open from 13:00 at the latest. The location is Rotary Pub, Richertsgatan 2B. We have rented out the pub so that we'll have access to professional bartenders and an abundant supply of good beer. Note that this means that you have to be at least 18 years old to participate. Also note that you are not allow to bring your own alcohol to the pub. The entrance fee is 150 sek (about $18) to cover the rent, prizes, Easter eggs, pins and such.

It is always nice to meet people from other communities around the world, so if this looks like something for you, don't hesitate to comment here or send me a mail at delaval@gmail.com.

As of December 11, we're unfortunately full (due to fire safety regulations in the pub). Pretty damn weird how much this tournament has grown. It's however very possible that some of the players signed up won't be able to make it, that some of the "pre-signed" *-players wont make it, or that there will be room for one or two more players depending on how the staffing of the pub looks. So feel free to sign up on a waiting list here or just email me and ask.

If you want to play some more Magic during the weekend, note that the tournament takes place the day before the larger eternal tournament's at Gothcon. Gothcon is Sweden's arguably best gaming convention and hosts the Vintage Nationals among many other sweet gatherings.
